Heshima Fashion Challenge
Tuesday, July 26, 2011 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM (CDT)
The HK 2011 Fashion Challenge will support the development of the Maisha Collective, a program of Nairobi, Kenya-based Heshima Kenya that trains and empowers young refugee women from Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, and the Congo to design, produce, and market a unique line of hand-dyed scarves. Founding members of the Collective will be honored for their strength and hope, and for sharing their skills with so many.
The evening, inspired by Project Runway, will bring together Chicago’s hottest new designers to create inspiring garments using actual scarves produced by members of the Collective. Designs will be judged by the audience and a panel of Chicago style icons.
A raffle with fabulous fashion goodies and a silent auction of packages inspired to pamper, renew, and style will round out the unforgettable evening. This memorable event will not only benefit Heshima Kenya’s programs, but also celebrate the vitality of Chicago’s fashion community.

The HK Fashion Challenge is proudly supported by:
The Heshima Fashion Challenge has been created to support the Maisha Collective in Nairobi, Kenya. The Maisha Collective—Maisha meaning “life” in Swahili–empowers graduates of Heshima Kenya’s Girl’s Empowerment Program through economic opportunities to rebuild their lives with peace and dignity.
The participants are refugee girls and young women from DR Congo, Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, and Burundi. By managing a business collective that designs and produces a line of unique tie and dye scarves, members gain life-long business and marketing skills that develop their confidence and prepare them for future independence.
The power of purchase inspires their journey to support, empower, and ultimately protect other young refugee women. All profits are reinvested into the Maisha Collective and support the participants’ success in Heshima Kenya’s programs.
